A little bit about Beantown Tea

Our story and tea journey started in 2006 when tea enthusiasts Wen and his cousin opened their first tea shop called Tea Zone in the Porter Square neighborhood of Somerville, Massachusetts.

In the early to mid 2000s, things were different. In the U.S, there were not many options for tea drinkers and prices were very expensive even for teas that were just of mediocre quality. Having grown up in a family with extensive background in the tea trade and a culture that socialize around tea time, Wen thought there could be quality teas that were affordable in the state side. So after almost a year of researching, finding and sourcing gourmet teas from around the world, he teamed up with his cousin and opened their tea shop in Somerville, Mass, a city in the Greater Boston area.

The shop soon gained success as a local tea purveyor and an online/mail order tea store. In 2007, our tea story was featured in Boston Globe and the local news paper Somerville Journal.

Beantown Tea Now

In 2011, Wen decided to explore further into the tea world. He traveled and spent the next 3 years in China, the No.1 tea producing country in the world. He joined his uncle, a tea collector and trader of vintage Pu Erh teas in Southern China, to study everything from tea making to tea trading. During this time, he also consulted tea exporters on global marketing and advertising.

Fast forward to 2014, Wen came back to the Boston area, and decided to continue on the same mission which is to make quality teas more available and affordable. After researching and working closely with tea farmers, exporters and entrepreneurs in the tea importing and food industry. The concept of expending the selection of quality teas and offering them at the right prices has come to fruition. Beantown Tea & Spices is now up and running.

The beantown tea team members are picky tea drinkers. We source and choose our teas very carefully. Prior to being cataloged, every tea is sampled and test tasted by us multiple times in various stages to ensure quality and freshness. Many of the herbal blends and chai blends we sell are our own proprietary blends for the same purpose of ensuring quality.
